Japanese Car Radios

Radio Frequency Converters

If your imported Japanese vehicle already has a radio fitted, then it will only receive stations in the Japanese Frequency Range. what this means in practice is that without any modification you will only be able to receive Radio 2! If Radio 2 is your thing then this will be fine - if not check out some of the information and links from this page.

Also check out the Japanese Cars Spare Parts Suppliers Pages, many of the companise listed there supply radio band converters / expanders for Japanese Radios.

Basically, Japanese Radios will only receive in the frequency range 76 to 90 MHz FM.

UK Radio Stations on FM are broadcast between 88 to 108 MHz so there is only a small overlap which happens to include the frequency for Radio 2.

A Frequency Band Expander will allow the Radio Signal coming in to be stepped down to match the Japanese car Radio.

Radio Band Expanders or Converters for Japanese Imported Vehicles are often sold on Ebay, for under £10, so this might be a good place to look if you are interested in fitting it yourself.

Radio Band converters are actually very simple to install, only needing to be placed in-line with the radio's aerial input and connected to a 12 volt power source.

You should also consider whether it will be more cost effective to simply fit a new UK Car Radio. If you are considering upgrading your in-car music system then this might be the way to go, anyway.

Most specialist car radio fitters and / or car alarm shops should have the knowledge to help with this.

There are two different types of Radio Band Converters available - make sure you get the one you want, as the fitting is likely to cost more than the expander itself.
